Dianne's Dish - Volume XI #2.2
Link Wray performs at the Continental Club
Hello everyone!
There are lots of changes & updates in this week's issue.
Tuesday Happy Hour, with Planet Casper, has a $5 cover charge, as well as Thursday Happy Hours when The Mother Truckers are playing. We've got some dynamite early shows coming up this month, beginning with tonight's Nick Lowe Tribute & CD Release Party (Thursday 7/12 @ 7pm).
On Friday night, one of my favorites, Big Smith is going to be starting at 9:30 instead of the usual 10-10:30pm. These Ozark boys have a lot to sing about & needed a little extra time to do it in. Please don't miss this chance to catch them as they don't get down here too often.
On Wednesday 7/18 Slowtrain has a 9:30 start time so that Blackwater Gospel can be on stage by 10:45. They're followed by Mario Matteoli at 12:15.
On Sunday 7/29 pat mAcdonald, formerly of Timbuk3, performs an early 8pm show. Heybale is gone that week, so newcomer Amber Digsby fills in. Amber was Heybale's special guest last week, and man, can that girl sing. I'm guessing her accomplished pedal steel player, Dickie Overby (Justin TreviƱo, and Darrell McCall, Feron Young and Connie Smith in the '60s) will be with her. He is simply awesome. I'm looking forward to hearing them do an entire night.
On Tuesday 7/31 & Wednesday 8/1 the Bill Frisell Trio, featuring Joey Baron & Tony Scherr, will play early 8pm shows ($25). American guitarist and composer Frisell's forte is smooth contemporary jazz, and progressive folk.
It's not an early show, but on Thursday 7/19 we've got the impressive lineup of Eve Monsees, Mike Buck, Homer Henderson, Mike Vernon, John Reed, Redd Volkaert, Casper Rawls, Bobby Rock, Paul Skelton, Teisco del Rey, Rosie Flores, Shaun Young, Thierry LeCoz, Olivier Giraud, and Eric Hokkenan coming together to pay tribute to the Godfather of Punk, the inventor of the Fuzz Tone and the Power Chord, and the creator of the #1 Rock Instrumental of all time ("Rumble"), the incomparable Link Wray.
Lonesome Spurs and Unknown Hinson will be here on Friday 7/20 & Saturday 7/21. I'm still not certain we can survive two crazy nights of Unknow Hinson, but it'll sure be fun trying!
The last weekend of the month, 7/26-7/29, 2007 Summer NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants - they stand for the interests of the global music products industry.) convenes in Austin and their presence will be strongly felt at The Continental Club. Besides an open-to-the-public industry party on Friday 7/27 with Unknown Hinson and Jesse Dayton, the Club will be closed on Saturday 7/28 for a private industry party. Dale Watson will be out of town on Monday 7/30, so Shotgun Party is holding their CD release party that night, with their buddy Greg Garing. It will also be a collection drive for Caritas' food pantry. It's a $5 cover, or $4 when you donate non-perishable food items at the door. I'm certain I've forgotten some other exciting happening, but just stay tuned and read on...

Check out the story, A Fresh Start, by the Statesman's style editor, Marques G. Harper, on four fashion and style stores in Austin who have recently gotten new owners. The Avenue Barbershop (formerly George's Barber Shop), 1710 S. Congress Ave., ph: 441-2467, is one of the businesses covered. Kevin Lemoine, who bought the barbershop this year with business partner Steve Wertheimer, is prominently featured in the story & in pictures!

Correction:
Dale Watson has played at the Grand Ole Opry many times, not just three, as I wrote last week. In fact, it may have been the third time this year! And on the subject of Dale, guess who showed up last week and played about half of the show with him? His "arch-nemesis," "The man with ten thumbs," Redd Volkaert! What fun that was!
